What a word wheel puzzle is
A word wheel puzzle gives you a handful of letters arranged in a circle and asks you to make words from them. You spell a word by moving across the letters in order, without lifting your finger, and each letter can be used once per word. Above the wheel sits a small crossword whose empty squares show exactly which words you are looking for and how long each one is.
It feels like an anagram game, and it is one, but the crossword changes everything. Every word you place fills squares that other words share, so each find gives you letters of the next. The puzzle is less about knowing rare words and more about reading the grid.
Playing Letter Lark on AllFun
AllFun Letter Lark is our word wheel game. A small lark flies the journey with you through 300 levels in fifteen skies of 20, from Dewdrop Hill and Kitestring Downs through Saltbreeze Bay, Honeycomb Cliffs and Snowberry Peaks to Moonpetal Gardens, Comet Coast and Larksong Summit. The first wheels have three letters and two words; the last ones have seven letters and up to ten words in the grid. Every grid word is a common everyday word.
The game also has a Daily wheel, the same puzzle for everyone each day, and a second mode, Word Search, with 135 levels in 45 themes. More calm word and logic games are on the puzzle games page.
The rules
- Spelling: swipe across the letters and let go to play the word. On a computer, type the letters and press Enter.
- Grid words: a word that belongs in the crossword flies into its squares, with its shared letters.
- Bonus words: a real word that is not in the grid goes into the bonus jar. Ten of them fill the jar for 25 coins.
- Win: every square of the crossword is filled.
- No pressure: there is no timer and no way to lose a level.
Helpers
Shuffle is always free: it turns the letters into a new order around the wheel. Hint shows one letter of a word you have not found, and the first Hint of each level is free. Pick shows the letter of any square you tap, and Word fills in a whole word. After the free Hint, a helper costs coins shared with the other AllFun games, or you can get it without coins.
The Daily wheel
The Daily wheel has six letters on weekdays and seven on Saturday and Sunday. Clear it on days in a row to build a streak; its calendar marks every day you cleared, and Share my result sends your words and time to a friend.
A method for finding every word
- Start with the shortest squares. Three-letter words are the easiest to find, and each one gives letters to the longer words that cross it.
- Read the lengths. The grid tells you how many letters each word has. If only one word of six letters is left, try six-letter words only.
- Use the letters you already have. A filled square in the middle of an empty word narrows it down: a word of five letters with an R in the second square starts very differently from one with an R at the end.
- Try the usual endings. Many wheels hold -ED, -ER, -ING, -EST or a plural S. Add them to words you have already found.
- Spell the longest word early. The longest grid word usually uses every letter of the wheel. Once you see it, the shorter words are hidden inside it.
- Shuffle before you pay. The same letters in a new order often show a word your eyes kept missing. Save the Hint for the very last word.
Word wheel FAQ
Why did a real word not go into the grid?
It is a real word but not one of this grid's words, so it counts as a bonus word and goes into the jar. Only the words that fit the crossword fill squares.
Why is a word I know not accepted?
The game accepts common words from an open word list. Very rare words, names and abbreviations are not in it, and neither are rude words.
Can every level be solved?
Yes. Every grid word is spelled from the letters of its own wheel, and every level is checked by our tests before it is offered.
How does Word Search work?
Find the words of the theme in a square of letters by dragging along them in a straight line. Later grids hide words diagonally and backwards. Finish within the time and without a hint for three stars.
